The last step of the SPDC’s road map to democracy is to hold a new election in 2010. The Burmese democracy leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, is the only person, from the point of view from SPDC, who can alter the course of these bogus elections. To prevent this, even before the antics of John Yattaw, they had built a new cell for her in Insein Prison. The show trial is nothing more than an attempt at legitimizing the forcible sidelining of her in the forthcoming elections.
Burmese activists and ex-political prisoners, in exile in Thailand, have formed the Joint Action Committee (JAC), to coordinate local protests about the trial and the behavior of the Junta. This group, made up of a number of Burmese organizations, has already led two demonstrations, one underneath the Friendship Bridge linking Thailand with Burma and another outside the UNHCR office.
The JAC believes that the only a coordinated response to the trial and strong action by groups of organizations will be effective against the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC). Waiting for the result of an unjust trial is not an option.
Through working together and continuing to raise this issue in every forum ASEAN, the International Criminal Court and the UN Security Council (UNSC) can be persuaded to take action. Moreover, the veto powers of China and Russia in the Security Council need to be overcome and this will only come through continued pressure.
The JAC thanks the local and international groups who are working for democracy and human rights in Burma and requests that they continue to join and give support for us against this injustice by worldwide peaceful protests. The JAC will continue to highlight the issue in every way that it can.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has suffered and sacrificed a substantial part of her life for the Burmese people and the JAC believes that she in turn should be supported through action as she faces an unjust trial.
