OUR THOUGHT

"When words are scarce they are seldom spent in vain".

Gambari apparently admitted that his good offices in Burma have failed, but he suggested the world that he must stay on the course for the sake of the suffering of the fifty plus million people in Burma. The international community also supported his work as a necessary job. Especially the UN and UNSC withholding “better than doing nothing” policy toward Burma overwhelmingly supported Gambari to keep on his job making the lives of the people in Burma miserable.

But no one bothers to question about what his job and how much did he managed to alleviate the pain the people have been suffering during these days, In this regard, ever since he was appointed, the political crisis and human rights violations have never been improved but even worse and the people have continued to live on with their lives without any hope for change. Daw Suu had highlighted it by not attending the useless meeting with Gambari when he was there in Burma the last time.

Remember his original mission to Burma is crystal-clear with two objectives. One was to press the regime the releases of political prisoners. And, the other one was to negotiate for direct dialogue between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and regime leaders, to improve Burma’s failing economy and to appoint a communications officer based in Burma. To carry out his mission, Gambari was sent to Burma six times already.

Unfortunately, at anytime he came back from Burma, Gambari always brought back the good-news for the regime by saying the democratization in Burma by the regime was on the right track. Human-rights situations are improved. He would urge the world to be patient on him and the regime. The regime’s foreign policy named “buying time” gets much needed help from him in order to stay in the course, To be summed up, he was always trying to safe the regime’s face since the day one of his assignment.

Now, the world including the UN’s patience is wearing thin due to his empty result that he always brought back from Burma. As a matter of fact, the failure of releasing of Daw Suu and all political prisoners became a bottom line for him to step off his position. Now, this is the time for the regime to favor Gambari in turn by releasing Daw Suu and political prisoners.

Last week, the regime’s Catch and Release game had played out artfully again. Remember, every year when the UN General Assembly is held, the regime used to release the prisoners as its goodwill gesture. And, the regime has released a handful political prisoner along with a bunch of criminals on the September 22, 2008. Now, Gambari has something good to say about it.

Oxymoronically, more than three hundred Buddhist Monks are tortured, disrobed and imprisoned now. The popular 8888 generation leaders are at the regime’s trials to spend their times in the prisons for a very long time. Outrageously, Gambari does not seem to understand that the lives of two thousand political prisoners at stake under the regime’s such deceitful and despicable and foolish game designed to show its positive gesture at the UN General Assembly.

Again, if we look into the recent statements of UN or Gambari, the UN wants to see the upcoming 2010 elections to be fair and inclusive. What Gambari is enacting for the regime is to erase the results of 1990 elections and to replace it with the regime’s 2010 election by garnishing with his worlds like urging the regime to release the political prisoners. In response, the regime has respectfully released the criminals and thugs along with very few political prisoners, who have been kept in the jails with no further legal reason after they had already served their times years ago.

Unfortunately, the world especially the neighbors, as usual, will welcome such move by saying please release more political prisoners on one hand. And, the regime’s continuation of the human rights violations will be denounced on the other. Finally, the regime will keep on doing the same without regarding the world’s reaction until its real task is fulfilled.

William Shakespeare said: "When words are scarce they are seldom spent in vain". Unfortunately, to our twenty years long struggle, the international criticism, censure, condemnation and resolutions for what the regime has done to the country have hold no water at all. Eventually, the words of UNSC and the two consecutive Secretary Generals of UN still could not seem to bite the regime at all.

We wonder how long we have to wait for the word by UN that can kill the regime.
