NDF Calls for Investigation into Claims of Vote Rigging
RANGOON — A Burmese opposition party, the National Democratic Force, said in a statement issued on Thursday that it would call on the Election Commission to investigate its complaints of vote rigging in last Sunday's election. The party said that initial vote counts indicated that it was strongly favored to win in a number of constituencies that later went to the regime-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party after advance ballots were added overnight. “We have a duty to inform people about this vote rigging,” said the party's leader, Khin Maung Swe. “During the vote counting, we were winning nearly 85 percent of the seats we contested. But the next day, we were defeated by advance ballots.” -
Court Refuses Suu Kyi Appeal
RANGOON — Supreme Court refused Aung San Suu Kyi's appeal against her house arrest sentence. “The Supreme Court was led by the chief justice. He confirmed the sentence,” an official told AFP on condition of anonymity. But hopes for her imminent freedom remained. Suu Kyi's lawyers expect her to be released on Saturday - just days after a rare election in which the junta's proxies claimed a landslide win - but they had hoped she would also be acquitted to prove her innocence. -
Suu Kyi Set to Probe Burma Vote Fraud
RANGOON — Aung San Suu Kyi will help investigate charges of election fraud if and when she is released from house arrest this week. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy has established a committee to probe allegations of fraud in the polls. NLD was officially disbanded as a political party because it refused to register for the polls it considered unfair, but the group remains active as a social movement. -
Parties Condemn 'Daylight Robbery'
Several parties have already lodged complaints with the electoral commission, but most are unlikely to proceed with them. It will cost the equivalent of US$10,000 to proceed with the complaint, and if they lose the case they will be given a $3,000 fine and three years in jail. Instead, a leading opposition politician, Than Nyein, has urged his NDF party's candidates and others not to sign declarations recognizing any controversial poll results. Security Stepped Up for Scheduled Suu Kyi Release
Security preparations are under way for the expected release of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Burmese government officials told AFP news agency. "We haven't got any instruction from superiors for her release yet, but we are preparing security plans for for November 13," a government official told the news agency.
