For saying the truth (Poem in Burmese)

Dear all

I sadly want to inform you that another cyclone canter at Bengalar bay and toward Irrawaddy division and Rangoon division .New cyclone not strong like Nargis but it will make rain a lot. Some expert say it might be a big problem for some victims of Nargis in Irrawaddy division. We just can pray for them to be safe.
As like the poem said.

Just can help
For saying the truth

I have winds but too young to fly
I have parents but they left me alone
For saying the truth
The fire may away from me

( part of the saying the truth from vattasutta of Buddha said)

We have
some person they said that they are government without our collected
They just do for their relatives and crazy on power
Many democratic countries and people from all over the world
they sympathized on us
but they just can criticized on SPDC and can't do more
For saying the truth
we want to be real human being
In a country full with democracy and human rights

Many Cyclone Survivors Trumatized

Many Cyclone Survivors Traumatized
By VIOLET CHO
Tuesday, May 13, 2008, -->

Survivors of Cyclone Nargis—especially children and the elderly—have undergone severe trauma and many will have long-term psychological problems because of the storm and their fight for survival during its aftermath, say aid workers.A Rangoon resident who has traveled to Bogalay Township for relief work, said, “People there look depressed and traumatized. They do not know what to say when people ask them questions. Young children seem afraid of water and the things around them.”
“They are suffering from mentally illness. Everywhere around them are dead bodies, injured people. It’s a miserable environment,” he said.According to the UN Children’s Fund, children are among the most vulnerable and are at a higher risk of protracted trauma and psychological problems, especially the ones who are now alone because family members are dead or missing. In some relief camps, UNICEF has set up special areas for children that are designed to provide a more normal environment with diversions and makeshift schools. Ramesh Shrestha, a UNICEF representative in Burma, said, "In any situation where you have children living under extremely stressful conditions, both physically and emotionally, it is important that they are provided with a space where they feel safe and provided for." No one is immune from feelings of sadness, guilt, anger and confusion. An elderly survivor from Kungyangong Township, a hard hit area south of Rangoon Division, is now living with relatives in Tachilek. “I am so afraid to see the sky turn grey as I worry that it is going to rain and the strong waves from the ocean will hit the land again,” he said. “I cry every time I think about what happened, and I can not sleep.” He lost seven grandchildren, one niece, one sister-in-law and many cousins. “I tried to hold my grandchildren’s hands tight when the water first hit us, but the waves were strong and big, and we could not hold on to each other—all my grandchildren disappeared in the waves.“I had never expected that I would face a horrible situation like this,” he said. “I really feel pain because I could not help my grandchildren and other family members. I could not do anything.” UNICEF says up to 90 per cent of the schools in the affected area have been damaged or destroyed, totaling some 3,000 primary schools and more than 500,000 pupils. Children are also more vulnerable to infectious diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, dengue fever and malaria, say aid workers. Even before the cyclone struck on May 3, about one in three children in Burma were malnourished.

Burma:CSW Call for International action in Burma crisis

BURMA: CSW CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL ACTION IN BURMA CRISIS
Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) today called for immediate, significant and effective action to address the deteriorating humanitarian and political emergency in Burma. CSW warned that failure on the part of the regime to facilitate international relief efforts could result in the international community being left with no option but to act without the regime's permission. CSW also called on the UN Security Council to refer a case against Burma's military regime to the International Criminal Court. While CSW welcomes the news that a US plane carrying aid has been permitted to land in Burma today, it is vital that international aid workers be permitted to access the disaster regions without further delay in order to ensure aid reaches the victims of Cyclone Nargis. Nine days after the cyclone struck, visas continue to be denied to aid workers. CSW is concerned after receiving clear evidence that in addition to the regime failing to respond to the crisis and blocking international access, it is actively obstructing the delivery of aid. There are reports that Burmese people attempting to distribute aid have been attacked by the regime's militia, the Union Solidarity Development Association (USDA) and Swan Ah Shin. CSW believes these actions provide further evidence amounting to charges of crimes against humanity already levelled against the regime, and calls for the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1674, known as the "Responsibility to Protect". CSW has also received reports from sources in some parts of Burma that people have overwhelmingly rejected the regime's proposed constitution in a referendum held on Saturday 10 May. Initial reports from some villages in Chin and Kachin states indicate a strong majority of votes cast against the constitution, and reports from other parts of the country show clear rigging by the regime. CSW has strongly condemned the referendum process as a "sham" and urges the international community to unite in rejecting the result if the regime declares victory. Voting in the cyclone-affected areas will take place on 24 May. CSW's Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: "As the death toll mounts daily, further delays in bringing aid and aid workers into Burma simply mean more deaths through starvation and disease. The bodies are piling up, and shocking photographs smuggled out of the country show whole communities wiped out. The regime is now guilty not only of neglect but of deliberate obstruction of emergency relief efforts. This adds to the list of charges of crimes against humanity which has mounted against this brutal regime over the years. It is time now to bring help to the Burmese people and to bring the Generals to justice." CSW is a human rights organisation which specialises in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all. Notes to Editors:Under Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, one of the categories of crimes against humanity, in addition to murder, rape and torture, is "other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or to mental or physical health". CSW has obtained graphic photographs of some of the victims of the crisis in Burma. For copies please contact CSW or see http://www.anavat.info:80/mailbox/fotos_nargis.zip ENDS

Post Referendum

Dear All readers

Referendum is finished today evening.I'd like to discard with you all ,what can we expect after referendum? What change will appear if Vote NO win?
My opinion is that ,SPDC already arrange to win.How matter you give NO vote ,you will see the result YES after counting votes .They are sure to win you give vote YES or vote NO.Because they already set up for it when they announced for referendum and election.Their announcement said they will held referendum on 10 May 2008 and they will held the election on 2010.It is sure that they did not have idea what they will do if they loose in referendum because they already decided they must win in referendum.

Actually ,most important thing for today Burma is how we can do and support for victim of cyclone Nargis .We can't solve the problems for that poor people till now. They still need food ,closes, shelter, medicine and so on.And some announcement said another big storm toward Burma .It is most important for our poor people. We love democracy , human rights and we love our people of Burma.

I'd like to request to people of Burma ,oversea Burmese and people from all over the world. We always value on human .So, we against SPDC military dictatorship for our human rights. That why , please think about victim people of Burma as first issue and let try for that urgently. And I have ever strongly believe no one can't get the power for long time without people support.

With regards and thank for seeing our blog.

Massive Cheating Reported from Referendum Polling Stations

Burma's constitutional referendum went ahead as planned on Saturday in areas not affected by Cyclone Nargis, amid accusations of massive cheating at the polling stations and reports of a very low turnout.

Many voters in several Rangoon townships, Mandalay, Pegu, Sagaing and Magwe divisions told The Irrawaddy that referendum officials had handed out ballot papers already filled in with a tick, indicating approval of the government’s draft constitution.

They also complained that the referendum was not free and fair, saying they cast their votes watched by officials, including members of the government-backed mass organization Union Solidarity and Development Association and militias such as Swan-Ar-Shin. Officials of the organizations sat close to the ballot boxes and advised people how to vote.

Voter turn-out was reported to be very light, despite fevered attempts by the regime to persuade people to participate. State TV broke into programming throughout the day with a video showing a group of smiling young women singing a ditty in support of a “Yes” vote. "Let's go vote .... with sincere thoughts for happy days," they sang.

About 27 million of Burma’s 57 million population are entitled to vote.

Nyan Win, spokesman of the opposition National League for Democracy told The Irrawaddy that most polling stations closed at about 11 a.m. Officials then went to the homes of people who had not voted and made them fill in registration forms indicating they had handed in ballots that had already been filled in with a tick.

Rangoon-based Burmese journalists said security at polling stations was very strict. No foreign news agency correspondents or independent journalists were allowed near.

The cheating and intimidation observed on Saturday confirmed claims by human rights activists and western governments that the referendum would be a sham and neither free nor fair.

The regime had used both intimidation and vote-buying to assure itself of a “Yes” vote and would predictably resort to vote-rigging if it lost, observers said. Widespread rumors say the results have already been fixed to deliver an 84.6 percent vote in favor of the charter, an AP report said.

The government has also been widely criticized for pressing on with the referendum while the country is still reeling from the catastrophic effects of Cyclone Nargis.

"Instead of putting all resources toward saving the lives of the victims, the military is concentrating on legalizing military rule in Burma forever through a sham constitutional referendum," said a joint statement from the All Burma Monks Alliance, the 88 Generation Students and the All Burma Federation of Student Unions.

Referendum Day (or)7th day for the Dead people of Burma after cycolne Nargis

.

ီDear All
Tomorrow will be the 7th day after the deaths of the people of Burma killed by cyclone Nargis. The Burmese traditional day of mourning occurs on this 7th day. On this 7th day, the SPDC has refused to delay the vote on their political Referendum. They will hold the Referendum on 10th May, 2008 in all of Burma, except in the cyclone affected areas. In fact, this military regime is incapable of helping their own people after the devastation of cyclone Nargis.

The victims of cyclone Nargis are in immediate need of food, drinking water, clothes, shelter, medicine and so on. However, the SPDC continues to ignore the needs of the victims and they refuse to accept aid and medical support from the international community, and NGOs. Their lack of action is so shocking and stunning that in lighter times, one could easily see it making the list of "Ripley's Believe it or Not."

The fact is, the military junta of Burma has insisted on holding their phony referendum over the dead bodies of 100,000 people.

NLD Special Statement 9-5-2008(Burmese and English)

National League for Democracy
No. (97/b) West Shwegondine Street
Bahan Township, Yangon
Special Statement 9/05/08
Date: 7 May 2008
In statement No. 4/2008, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) declared
a State of Emergency in Irrawaddy, Yangon, and Pegu Divisions and Karen and Mon
States as a result of Cyclone Nargis’s devastating destruction on the 2nd and 3rd of
May 2008.
Because of the storm, hundreds of thousand of people have died and remain missing.
The storm caused catastrophic and unprecedented damage of people’s property in
Burma. Victims and their relatives, including ethnic nationalities, are overwhelmed by
their loss. Under these circumstances, people have no desire to vote in the upcoming
referendum. However, in spite of the people’s plight, authorities adamantly plan to
hold the referendum. As authorities neglect people’s basic needs and struggles for
food, shelter, and clothing, they continue to work with supporting organizations to
coerce people to vote “yes” in the referendum in support of their constitution.
On 6 May 2008, the Referendum Convening Commission of the Union of Burma
issued Statement 8/2008 confirming that the referendum will be held on 10 May 2008
in all states and divisions except 40 townships in Yangon division and 7 townships in
Irrawaddy division. It further declared that the referendum for the remaining 47
townships will be held on 24 May 2008. Aid needs and reconstruction work in these
States of Emergency will not be finished by 24 May 2008.
Authorities continue to exploit people's difficulties. The Referendum should be
postponed in all parts of the country, not only in some parts. Convening the
referendum under these dire conditions is deplorable. Therefore, the NLD demands
that the referendum be held simultaneously in all parts of the country once the
conditions in the country have improved.
NLD reprimands authorities for prioritizing approval of their constitution over
people's lives and basic survival needs.
At the present time, victims of the storm need immediate international aid, including
aid from the United Nations. On behalf of the people, the NLD denounces the
authorities’ attempt to hold a referendum instead of accepting disaster relief aid for
the suffering victims of this disaster.
As per the decision of Central Executive Committee held on 7 May 2008.

Eighty Thousand People Dead’; Cholera Cases Reported

(An Irrawaddy correspondent has returned from the delta area after interviewing military officers, government officials, medical personnel and survivors of Cyclone Nargis.)

An army major with the Irrawaddy Division military headquarters who asked not to be identified said on Wednesday more than 600 villages are submerged in the Irrawaddy delta along Cyclone Nargis’ deadly path.

Multimedia (View)
The worst-hit areas are Bogalay, Laputta, Mawlamyaing Gyun and Pyapon townships where, he said, more than 80,000 people have died and more than 700,000 people are homeless.

Local medical personnel said some survivors from Kyein Kyi Chaung village in Bogalay have died of cholera. Cholera has also occurred among some survivors from Laputta. The government has been transferring Laputta refugees to Myang Mya Township daily, according to an army officer.

“The cholera outbreak has begun,” said one medical worker. “People have nothing to drink so they drink water from the creeks and rivers. So that is how the outbreak began.

“These waterways are dirty because they are littered with bodies and animals. The survivors know the water is dirty, but they have no other choice and have had to drink the dirty water. That’s how they contracted cholera.

“This is the time for us to stock up on cholera medicine for the possibility of an outbreak in the near future. However, we do not have enough medicine.”

Bogalay was the hardest-hit township with the highest death toll, believed to be around 50,000 people. The military officer said the second largest death toll was in Laputta, with Pyapon third in the number of fatalities.

“Laputta had nearly 20,000 deaths,” he said.

An army officer with Light Infantry 66 who has been involved in relief efforts said:
“A total of 142 villages went under water in Bogalay Township. The majority of the people in these villages have died. Only a few survived. For instance, Khaing Shwe Wa village in Kyun Thaya Dai Nel (village tract) had about 400 people before the cyclone; now they have only four people left. So you can say that the whole village was wiped out.”

All 50 villages in Kyun Thaya Dai Nel located between Meinmahla Kyun and Kadonkana islands southwest of Boglay are submerged. (The villages include Mi Laung Gwin, Kapanan, Yei Kyaw Gyi, Chaung Phye, Gway Chaung, Khaing Shwe Wa, Danyinphyu, inner and outer parts of Khaung Gyi Island, Buyakyaung, Hmon Tine Gyi, Hmon Tine Lay, Tayaw Chaung, Pulonetaing, Ashe-mae, Kantmalar, Chachee Island village, Thakinma Gyi, Thitpoke village, Letwel Gyi, Kyat Pyay and Thamadi).

Thirty-three villages located in the Kyein Chaung Gyi village tract about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Bogalay were wiped out, including Shwe Htoo, Lamu Oat Gyi, Lamu Oat Lay, Ma Kyin Myaing, Hlay Lone Kwe, Arr-makhan, Japan Island and Lay Gwa.

The officer from Light Infantry 66 said thousands of people were rescued in recent days from villages where the water level has gone down.

Local residents said many people have seen no relief supplies during the past six days following the disaster. People do not know where to go to seek help, and they are in desperate need of safe drinking water, food and medicine.

A government officer with the Maternal and Child Care Association serving Laputta and Pyapon said there is widespread fear of diseases such as malaria, diarrhea and cholera because of dead bodies that litter the area and unsanitary living conditions.

A resident in the Kadon village tract who has been involved in the relief effort, said: “We are using May Kha, a double-deck boat; Thuria, a long-tale boat; and local fishing boats known as jote (30-35 feet long) in our efforts to find survivors.”

Another soldier with Light Infantry 66 said, “There is not even a trace of a village left after the water has receded; they are just open, empty places now. There are thousands of decaying corpses around islands, villages and along the waterfronts. There is no one to cremate the bodies.”

A rescue worker said: “There’s a pile of dead bodies amounting to hundreds in and around Mein Ma Hla Island. The waterfront along this area is littered with bodies, carcasses of live stock, buffaloes, cupboards, furniture and other household materials.

A Cyclone Diary

Sanchaung Township. May 2-3

I first heard that a cyclone was approaching Burma on the 1 p.m. news on May 2. The next day, the cyclone’s approach was reported in the state-published newspapers, but the item was buried amid other news. The constitutional referendum planned for May 10 dominated the headlines. Later I heard that many people had overlooked the news item, believing it was of little importance.

At about 2 p.m. On May 3, a friend from Bassein, capital of Irrawaddy Division, called me with the news that the cyclone had hit Haing Gyi island in the Irrawaddy delta. Some villages near Chaung Thar beach had reportedly disappeared. I tried to call Chaung Thar to confirm the news but I couldn't get through.

Journalists from some Rangoon publications set out that day to try and reach Bassein, but I later heard that they hadn’t been able to get there.

Offices and schools in Rangoon closed early, and worried groups of residents gathered at bus stops.

Myanmar TV carried storm warnings on its 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. newscasts, but few viewers took the news seriously—not much credence is given to anything carried by the state media.

It rained later that night, and the wind picked up, growing stronger all the time. At 2 a.m. On May 3, the howling wind woke people up and frightened the children. At around 4 a.m. the residents of one eight-story apartment block left their homes and sought shelter on the ground floor. Zinc roofing was being ripped off the building and the rain was penetrating homes.

In her dilapidated home in Rangoon’s Wartayar district, Ma Oo, a food vendor, described how she recited Than Buddhe rhymes to her eight year-old son and five year-old daughter to comfort them.

She heard cries of help and ran outside, taking the children—just in time to see their home collapse before their eyes. A neighbor, Ma Kyin Ngwe, called them over to her own ruined home, and they hugged the ground as the wind sent pots, pans and furniture flying around them.

There was no escape from the fury of the storm. Wartayar is a raw, treeless place, accommodating people made homeless by a disastrous fire in Rangoon’s Hlaing Township.

May 3, 11 a.m.

The wind began to slacken. In its wake it left behind a scene of devastation—fallen trees and power lines, roofless buildings, collapsed homes. Shocked residents gathered outside to assess the damage.

People began to tour the streets, looking for shops that would sell them food and other provisions. Many shops were closed, and those shopkeepers who opened their doors demanded inflated prices.

Many prices had doubled virtually overnight. A duck egg now cost 200 kyat (18 US cents). Zinc roofing—now in big demand—had jumped in price from 1,200 kyat ($1) per square foot to as much as 3,000 kyat ($2.7).

Neighbors helped each other. A resident of Rangoon’s Shwepyithar district said, "We had to. Anybody with sufficient rice distributed it to those in need, starting with children and the elderly.”

The demand for zinc roofing sheets and rice grew still further. Buses were back in service, but fares had risen astronomically. A 50 kyat (4 US cents) ticket now cost 2,000 kyat ($1.60).

Taxi fares also jumped, keeping pace with increases in the price of fuel. Not only fuel was in short supply—clean water, too, was hard to find and cost up to 3,000 kyat ($2.40) for 20 liters.
